Open plans are fun with so much opportunity for versatility and creativity. This is a sketch done for a home without clear definition of space, with the entrance found at the left of this drawing (not shown) and a small kitchen at the right (also not shown but hopefully you get it :D) This is a simple home, very linear. The most semi-public space by the entrance, the entertainment zone. A workstation requested by the owner provides an in-between zone for the entertainment and dining zone which is the more personal space among the three.

Zoning is important because it gives an open plan coherence. Other factors that can define a space include: furniture, colors and actual physical dividers like walls.
